Short story check list

Content:

-       The context is clearly established (character, setting, hint at problem included in the introduction)
-       The events are creative and connect
-       Supporting details are precise (show not tell)
-       The writing is original and confident (ending not predictable, interesting plot)

Organization:

-       events are in paragraphs with a clear order
-       all actions, details, characters are connected
-       the ending ties the events and actions together

Sentence Structure:

-       sentence beginnings are different
-       sentence length is varied (longer and shorter sentences)
-       five paragraphs written

Vocabulary:

-       words are used accurately
-       words and sentences create vivid images
-       words enhance the voice/theme of the story

Conventions:

-       capital letters (proper name, places, beginning of sentences, I)
-       spelling (sound out)
-       re-read to make sure sentences make sense
