Story structure, steps and goals

Grade 6 story writing Story structure: Introduction – introduce characters, setting, hint at problem Describe main problem Two attempts to solve the problem or overcome obstacles Solution – most exciting part, describe in slow motion Ending – how does it resolve Steps to completing story: 1-   Finish rough draft 2-   Edit work 3-   Write a good copy 4-   Illustrate Goal:   Pause and describe in the significant areas (show not tell using the five senses) Use specific descriptive vocabulary Attempt to use figurative language to enhance imagery Clear sentence structure, spelling, capital letters and punctuation Write in paragraphs that connect smoothly Balance of description and dialogue Ending connects back to the beginning and is unpredictable

Writing an introduction

Introduction – introducing your key character, setting and hint at a problem Hook – dialogue, sound, thought, action Dialogue – “Why did you have to go and do that!” exclaimed the angry teacher. Sound -    Boom!   The thunderous explosion shook the campers tent at daybreak.   Thought - I wish that hadn’t happened today. Action – The mountain lion pounced from the shadows, it’s sharp claws drawn and baring his teeth.   Example: Zap! Joe had been practicing his wand skills all morning.  He had learned a new one at wizard school and he couldn’t figure out how to make it work.  He decided to go to his friend Anna’s house to see if she could help. Short story unit

Short story unit The grade 6 students will be working on a story telling unit that will cover many of the different areas of ELA such as reading, writing, managing information, speaking, representing and listening.   The first part of the unit will be to explore and plan their stories.   The students will read a variety of short stories and brainstorm different ways they may want to re-write it with using some aspect of the story but with a twist that means something to them!
