Short story unit

Short story unit

The grade 6 students will be working on a story telling unit that will cover many of the different areas of ELA such as reading, writing, managing information, speaking, representing and listening.

The first part of the unit will be to explore and plan their stories.  The students will read a variety of short stories and brainstorm different ways they may want to re-write it with using some aspect of the story but with a twist that means something to them!

The short stories the students will read in class come from this website: Short stories for middle school

Planning:

Choose one short story to read and answer the following questions:

Who is the main character (protagonist) of the story?

What is the key setting (time/place) in the story?

What is the main problem in the story?

How does the character change over the course of the story?

Explain one feeling a character might be experiencing and why they may feel this way?

What does the story say about human nature?

What are the themes or lesson in this story?

Which elements will you use in your short story?

Why did you choose these parts?
