Due date!

Grade 6 news articles are due today!  Please share with me at lmbly@edu.cbe.ca if you haven't already.

News articles

The students have been working on a news article project.  They have gathered their facts and information and are currently in the writing phase. The final article is due Wednesday and class time will be provided. The students have been reading articles from DOGO news and Times for kids to help understand this style of writing.

Reading comprehension multiple choice practice

We have been doing some practice PAT questions with the students and many are finding them difficult.  However, they are difficult (new and challenging) and as a whole we do need a lot of practice with it.   There's a practice PAT's online to work through   https://education.alberta.ca/media/1089094/ela6_released-2009-english.pdf .   Reading at home independently and with someone will help build vocabulary and having discussions will help with comprehension. There's also a program called Read Theory online the students can sign up for  https://www.readtheory.org  to help practice multiple choice questions.

Reading comprehension

The students have been working on reading comprehension strategies based on the short story All Summer in a Day We have worked on retrieving details and making inferences using the following questions: All Summer in a Day Retrieving details questions:  1)     Which planet is this story set on? 2)     How would you describe the weather on this planet? 3)     How does Margot describe the sun? 4)     How is Margot physically described in the story? 5)     What is the main reason why the other students do not like Margot? 6)     What do the students do to Margot because she does not agree with them? 7)     How is the sun described when it finally comes out on the planet? 8)     How did the sun make the children feel? 9)     How long do they have to wait before the sun comes out again? 10) What happene...

Fact, opinion and inference

The students have been learning the difference between fact, opinion and inferences.  This is important for both their listening and reading comprehension.  We have done two assessments based on these skills and the results can be found on Powerschool.  We will be working more on this skill in the new year. The students have also incorporated their understanding with some fun debates.  They listened to the podcast Smash Boom Best and are developing their own debates. The podcast can be found here:  Smash boom best podcast

Vlog marks

The students have been provided with their peer feedback and marks for the vlog project.  Official marks are posted on Powerschool.

Here is a link to the Oscar winning short animation based on the poem.  Dear Basketball The students will be looking at how to write with a unique voice, organize topics and sub topics purposefully and use specific language to express their ideas. There will also be a speaking and representation component to this project.  The work will be done in class, so step-by-step modeling and feedback can be provided.
